Natural Gourmet Cooking School Dinner

Jamie tracked down a wonderful surprise for a recent dinner. She made reservations far in advance for one of the special Friday Night dinners at the Natural Gourmet Cooking School on 21st Street in Manhattan.

For a very reasonable $40 per person, and the opportunity to BYOB, we were treated to a gourmet presentation of all vegetarian (although not vegan, as there was some dairy) healthy, organic, sustainable foods. Normally, one considers that the healthier the foods are, the less attractive and tasty they are. In this case, the meal proved to be not just beautifully prepared and presented, but very delicious, as well!

Asmak Taama – New York’s Finest Egyptian Seafood

As a big fan of Robert Sietsema’s food blog in the Village Voice, the cleverly-named “Fork in the Road,” I’m always on the lookout for his latest discoveries.

Jamie & I had a need to get out of the City, a brief relief from the everyday commonplace. We’ve also long wanted to travel to Egypt, ride a camel, and check out the Pyramids.

Sietsema wrote a memorable piece about his experience with a few rock and roll luminaries at Asmak Taama in Bay Ridge, and, being huge fans of great seafood, we decided to investigate for ourselves.

Grab the Tiger by the Tail at Mai House

Another New York CitySearch Cocktail roundup notable entry mentioned “Mai House,” a great restaurant begun by Drew Nieporent down on Franklin Street, near other great spots of his excellent Myriad Restaurant Group, “Tribeca Grill,” and “Nobu,” both of which he had previously opened with Robert DeNiro. Good friends of mine are investors in the restaurant, and I’ve had the fortune to dine there a few times.

Mai House represents a departure for Drew and his team, and one big piece of the menu was the cocktail menu. Obviously, they were shooting for Asian-inspired, exotic flavors, and they really hit the mark with their choices.
