Cocktails @Tailor: Bubble Gum 1, Mushroom 0

The Mushroom Margarita(Image Courtesy of CitySearch)

As a big fan of New York Citysearch, I always take note of their editorial suggestions. They’ve bailed me out on many an occasion, and between their editorial and user reviews, you can usually get a pretty good idea of what a place is like. They sent out a piece on Friday about the best, most unusual cocktails, and seeing as Jamie is a huge fan of “chick-coctails,” those Cosmo-inspired sweet concoctions, we needed to check out the flavors.

Our first stop was the very trendy Tailor, a very happening restaurant and lounge at 525 Broome. The two cocktail choices that jumped out there were the “Bazooka,” pink and supposedly exactly as tasty as the Bazooka bubble gum of our youth, and the Mushroom Margarita, with huitlacoche (pronounced “wheat-la-coachay,” a flavorful fungus that grows on corn) mezcal, triple sec, lime, and lava salt.

The Bazooka was sublime, and anyone who enjoys a sweet drink should drop by for one, and dish of the tasty, fresh-popped complimentary popcorn.

Alas, the margarita, in practice, tasted more like an old, wet sponge that a dog had laid on for a couple of days, and did not quite pull off any of the huitlacoche, mezcal, lava salt, or margarita heritages in a convincing fashion.
